XHTML 2 Dies a Lonely Death, Makes Room For HTML 5

The web’s governing body has taken XHTML 2.0 off life support. The World Wide Web Consortium, the group charged with overseeing the languages that power the web, has decided not to renew the charter of the XHTML2 working group, which is set to expire at the end of 2009.

Quick, web developers, the sky is falling — panic!

Actually, the sky is just fine. In fact, it’s considerably clearer than it used to be, and there’s certainly no reason to panic overthe death of XHTML 2.0. The supposed successor to XHTML 1.x and the markup language that was once hailed as the next evolutionary step for the web has for all intents and purposes been dead for years. All the W3C has done is give it a proper headstone. And with the burial complete, the W3C can put all its efforts into the real future of the web — HTML 5.

Hybrid Solar Cells Shine

As the race to create clean, renewable power heats up, the solar industry is focusing on a technology in hopes of producing utility-scale energy.

Concentrating photovoltaic (CPV) solar power -- which marries traditional solar photovoltaic technology to large-scale concentrated solar power plants -- could ramp up utility-scale solar production, advocates say, especially in niche markets. But as with all developing technologies, the effort faces significant hurdles.

Low-tech underwater mines are easy to place undetected, but are powerful enough to damage modern warships. To clear these hazards, Northrop Grumman is developing a helicopter-based technology, called the Rapid Airborne Mine Clearance System (RAMICS).

Lattice structure enables super-thin material to absorb nearly 100% of light

Two Leiden University (The Netherlands) researchers have demonstrated that at a thickness of 4.5 nm, niobium nitride (NbN) is able to absorb nearly 100% of light. Previously, they say, the best light absorption was 50%. The material promises to enable "the ideal light detector"; a cell made from the material has already proven able to collect light and convert it to an electrical signal. The researchers' work, reported in Applied Physics Letters, was among the journal's top 20 most downloaded articles in May.

Japan is considering introducing a new type of missile defence system to counter airborne attacks, notably from North Korea, a local newspaper said Sunday.

Japan has two types of defence against airborne attacks -- the warship-installed Standard Missile 3 (SM-3) and Patriot Advanced Capability 3 (PAC-3), a surface-to-air missile that tracks and hits incoming targets.
